About Dr. Ramesh Babu – Pediatric Urology

Dr. Ramesh Babu, a gold medalist in medicine and surgery, graduated from Madurai Medical College (1985-1991).

He finished MS (general surgery) from Calicut medical College in 1994

MCh Pediatric Surgery from Institute of Child Health, Chennai in March 1997.

He passed FRCS (gen surgery) from Royal College of Glasgow

FRCS (gen surgery) from Royal College of Edinburgh in July 1997.

He underwent special training in pediatric Urology & laparoscopic surgery in the United Kingdom between1997- 2003.

He worked at premier institutes like Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, Bristol Children’s hospital, University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff and Southampton University hospital where he underwent elaborate training in audit, research methods, leadership and management skills.

His research on glutamine and glutathione at the Institute of Child Health, London won him Donald Paterson Prize for best pediatric research published by Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, UK for the year 2001.

He passed the intercollegiate exam of FRCS in Pediatric Surgery & Pediatric Urology and obtained Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training, UK in the year 2003.

He returned back home, joined Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospital in Oct 2003 and has been working as a Professor of Pediatric Urology till date.

He obtained Ph.D in Pediatric Urology from SRIHER in the year 2020

He is a member of several medical associations (IAPS, SPU, USI, PESI)

He was the chairman of Society of Pediatric Urology, a chapter of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (2019-2020).

He has authored 55 articles in international indexed journals

He has written five medical text book chapters.

He has been a reviewer for several international and national medical journals and has been awarded as a best reviewer for the year 2017 by Journal of Pediatric Urology.

He conducts regular workshops under the banner PURE which stands for ‘Pediatric Urology Ramachandra Education”.

He is a trainer at CEMAST – Centre of excellence for Minimal Access Surgery Training, Mumbai.

He is a PhD. Guide, an examiner for M.Ch in Pediatric Surgery and Post doctoral fellowship in Pediatric Urology.

He has performed more than 4000 endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures on children with problems of kidney and urinary tract.

He has published five books; two English novel,[mythology fiction thrillers], one book on Hinduism philosophy and two medical reference books. He compiled and published IAPS national standard treatment guidelines on Pediatric Urology in 2020. He published a text book on “Dysfunctional and Neurogenic Bladder” in 2021

He has taken a lead in formulating government guidelines on intersex (DSD) surgery in children. This has been published as GO by TN government.

He is a regular participant of Terry Fox marathon, an event which supports Children’s Cancer Research. He has special interest in oil painting and has been pursuing it regularly.

Awards & Research Experience

Won Donald Paterson Prize for best Paediatric research London 2001 for Research in Paediatric Surgery under Prof. Spitz at Great Ormond St Hospital, London: ‘Role of Glutamine and Glutathione in amelioration of liver dysfunction during Sepsis’.

His PhD research was on ‘Role of immunohistochemistry and special stains in locating normal ureter distal to UPJO during pyeloplasty’
