Dr. S. Ramesh Babu

MBBS from Madurai Medical College (1985-1991). He finished MS (general surgery) from Calicut medical College in 1994 and MCh Pediatric Surgery from Institute of Child Health, Chennai in 1997. He passed FRCS (gen surgery) from Royal College of Glasgow and FRCS (gen surgery) from Royal College of Edinburgh in 1997.

He underwent special training in pediatric Urology & laparoscopic surgery in the United Kingdom between 1997- 2003. He worked at premier institutes like Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, Bristol Children’s hospital, University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff and Southampton University hospital.

He passed the intercollegiate exam of FRCS in Pediatric Surgery & Pediatric Urology and obtained CCST, UK in the year 2003. He returned back home, joined Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospital in Oct 2003 and has been working as a Professor of Pediatric Urology till date. Obtained Ph.D in Pediatric Urology from Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education & Research 2020

He is a member of several medical associations (IAPS, SPU, USI, PESI). Past chairman for Society of Pediatric Urology, a chapter of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons between 2019 and 2021. Past secretary of Tamilnadu & Pondicherry Chapter of Pediatric Surgeons 2021-2023. As a past chairman [2023-24] of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons, he has taken many steps for young pediatric surgeons: IAPS Zee application, revision of standard treatment guidelines, national & international travel fellowships, award papers for pediatric & general surgery trainees, promotion of job opportunities, insurance for children and policy making for DSD, live workshops etc

He has authored 135+ articles in international & national indexed journals and written five text book chapters (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4831-5795). He has a H-index of 20+ with 1700 citations. He is a reviewer for several international journals like Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Journal of Pediatric Urology, Pediatric Surgery International, Asian Journal of Urology, World Journal of Urology, IJU, JIAPS. He is an editorial board member of Pediatric Surgery international and is a regional editor of Springer group of Journals.

He conducts regular workshops under the banner PURE which stands for ‘Pediatric Urology Ramachandra Education”. http://pediatricurologyonline.in/PURE.htm Has organized sevenworkshops and two national conferences of Society of Pediatric Urology in 2017 & 2020. He is a trainer at CEMAST – Centre of excellence for Minimal Access Surgery Training, Mumbai. He is the course director of the Pediatric Urology Fellowship program at SRIHER.  He is an examiner for M.Ch in Pediatric Surgery and Post doctoral fellowship in Pediatric Urology.

Published the following medical books: 1. “Dysfunctional & Neurogenic Bladder”.  2. Pediatric Urology – A practical handbook”  3. “Pediatric surgery IAPS standard treatment guidelines” 4. “Pediatric Minimal Access Surgery” 5. IAPS textbook of pediatric surgery 

He has taken a lead in formulating TN state government guidelines on intersex surgery in children. This is published as a TN Government Order in 2020.  Has successfully lobbied for insurance cover for congenital anomalies from IAPS, A special policy called Women’s insurance which covers congenital anomalies from Day-1 has been launched by Star Health Insurance.

He has special interest in oil painting and has created many canvas paintings. He has written three novels, two of which are mythology fiction thrillers and one is on Hinduism. He is a regular participant of Terry Fox marathon, an event which supports Children’s cancer research
